Goma-ae – steamed vegetable marinated with sesame sauce

sesame sauce

I made steamed carrot marinated with sesame sauce. It is sweet and yam. The one on the blue dish is the sesame sauce. My neighbor, Casey eats rice with goma-ae.

If you like going to Japanese restaurants, you perhaps know that goma-ae is a popular side dish.  Goma-ae is steamed vegetable marinated with Goma sauce and a popular side dish. My neighbor, Casey asked me for a its recipe.

I started to make goma-ae replicating my mother’s taste after moving out from my parents’ house.  I use different ingredients depending on what turned out handy. I can think of those two recipes.

<Spinach gomaae recipe 1>
1 bunch of spinach (or any other vegetable you like)
2 tablespoon mayonnaise
1 tablespoon soy sauce *
1 tablespoon roasted and grinded sesame seeds
1/2 teaspoon sugar

*If you can find ‘dashi-jouyu’ in a Japanese grocery store it gives more flavor. Dashi-jouyu is soy sauce with Japanese soup stock.

<Spinach Goma-ae recipe 2>
1 bunch of spinach (or any other vegetable you like)
2 tablespoon roasted and grinded sesame seeds
4 teaspoon sugar
2 teaspoon miso *
1 teaspoon water
